Fizzle: Fourth of July in Old Town Canceled

Posted By on Mon, May 11, 2020 at 2:22 PM

While California and Humboldt are loosening some restrictions on shelter-in-place orders, safely gathering in large crowds is still far off. With this in mind, Eureka Main Street has announced the cancelation of the annual Fourth of July street festival. In a press release, EMS says it joins Arcata and Southern Humboldt in skipping the fireworks and festivities this year.

You can still express your patriotism on the nation's birthday by grilling outside, blowing some bubbles and keeping your fellow Humboldters safe by keeping your distance as you listen for the illegal M-80s that one guy in your neighborhood will definitely still be setting off.

Read the organization's message below:

We are sorry to announce that the 2020 4th of July Festival, Arts Alive and Fireworks Show are canceled. We received a letter from the City, and big events are not on the immediate horizon. We join a list including the Arcata Chamber and Southern Humboldt who have had to cancel. We are all cautious about the risks large gatherings might have on the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

We look forward to seeing you in 2021!
